Downtown Wilmington is a great place to go for shopping, restaurants and just plain walking....and it's only minutes away.
The USS North Carolina is a WWII battleship which has been faithfully restored and is a must see. "Moored in quiet dignity and majesty the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, across the river from downtown Wilmington, beckons visitors to walk her decks. Envision the daily life and fierce combat her crew faced in the Pacific Theatre during World War II."
Wrightsville Beach is a mere 11 miles away, and is one of the nicest family beaches around. "As North Carolina's most accessible beach from Interstate I-40, it's easy to get to Wrightsville Beach and easier to stay. Surrounded by the Intracoastal Waterway and the ocean, it is the perfect place to practice all watersports at North Carolina's most accessible beach."
River Tours give the history of the river while providing a close up look at the Cape Fear River . "The "Wilmington" offers a variety of scheduled cruises throughout the year; historic eco tours, sunset or full moon cruises, narrated tours, Eagles Island, Blackwater cruise, and more."
A few miles away is the NC Aquarium at Ft. Fisher. This is a great aquarium for the whole family located in Kure Beach, NC at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. "Visitors journey along "The Waters of the Cape Fear", from freshwater streams and swamps, to coastline habitats, reefs and the open ocean".
If you're a civil war buff, plan on visiting Fort Fisher. "Until the last few months of the Civil War, Ft. Fisher kept North Carolina's port of Wilmington open to blockade runners supplying necessary goods to Confederate armies inland. By 1865, the supply line through Wilmington was the last remaining supply route open to Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia."
Located near Wrightsville Beach, Airlie Gardens is a remarkable attraction. "Airlie continues to amaze visitors with its breathtaking combination of formal gardens, wildlife, historic structures, walking trails, sculptures, views of Bradley Creek, 10-acres of freshwater lakes, more than 100,000 azaleas and the grandeur of the 467-year-old Airlie Oak.".
